It seems that Tolkien is just as casual about the quotation as most people.
In Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice the Prince of Morocco actually says:-"All that glisters is not gold;
Often have you heard that told.
Many a man his life hath
But my outside to behold.
Gilded tombs do worms enfold."It is glisters and
OT glitters in the original version.
