ON the mead a violet stood,
Retiring, and of modest mood,
In truth, a violet fair
Then came a youthful shepherdess,

Its stalk was bent, it hung its head As if to hide from view
And yet it was a lovely flower, Its colour bright and fair;

The violet in her greenwood bower,
Where birchen boughs with hazel mingle,

In glen, or copse, or forest dingle
