First Handshake

He ran alongside the bus all the way across town,

He didn’t break a sweat as he jogged up to the corner where my bus stopped.

I waited in the line to exit, I tugged on the hem of the suffocating blue tunic.

It was hot, too hot.

Too hot, too hot.

I stepped off of the yellow school bus, waving to the driver as I got out,

And

“HELLO!”

She thrust her hand in my face, I jumped and looked at him,

A camera covering his eyes

I was on camera

So

I extended my hand, the woman’s face already gone.

She shook it, she waved it up and down like a trophy.
