The Alexandrians were gatheredto see Cleopatra's children,
Caesarion, and his little brothers,
Alexander and Ptolemy, whom for the firsttime they lead out to the Gymnasium,there to proclaim kings,in front of the grand assembly of the soldiers.
Alexander — they named him kingof Armenia,
Media, and the Parthians.
Ptolemy — they named him kingof Cilicia,
Syria, and Phoenicia.
Caesarion stood more to the front,dressed in rose-colored silk,on his breast a bouquet of hyacinths,his belt a double row of sapphires and amethysts,his shoes fastened with whiteribbons embroidered with rose pearls.
Him they named more than the younger ones,him they named King of Kings.
The Alexandrians of course understoodthat those were theatrical words.
But the day was warm and poetic,the sky was a light azure,the Alexandrian Gymnasium wasa triumphant achievement of art,the opulence of the courtiers was extraordinar y,

Μαζεύθηκαν οι Αλεξανδρινοίνα δουν της Κλεοπάτρας τα παιδιά,τον Καισαρίωνα, και τα μικρά του αδέρφια,
Αλέξανδρο και Πτολεμαίο, που πρώτηφορά τα βγάζαν έξω στο Γυμνάσιο,εκεί να τα κηρύξουν βασιλείς,μες στη λαμπρή παράταξη των στρατιωτών.
Ο Αλέξανδρος -- τον είπαν βασιλέατης Αρμενίας, της Μηδίας, και των Πάρθων.
Ο Πτολεμαίος -- τον είπαν βασιλέατης Κιλικίας, της Συρίας, και της Φοινίκης.
Ο Καισαρίων στέκονταν πιο εμπροστά,ντυμένος σε μετάξι τριανταφυλλί,στο στήθος του ανθοδέσμη από υακίνθους,η ζώνη του διπλή σειρά σαπφείρων κι αμεθύστων,δεμένα τα ποδήματά του μ' άσπρεςκορδέλλες κεντημένες με ροδόχροα μαργαριτάρια.
Αυτόν τον είπαν πιότερο από τους μικρούς,αυτόν τον είπαν Βασιλέα των Βασιλέων.
Οι Αλεξανδρινοί έννοιωθαν βέβαιαπου ήσαν λόγια αυτά και θεατρικά.
Αλλά η μέρα ήταν ζεστή και ποιητική,ο ουρανός ένα γαλάζιο ανοιχτό,το Αλεξανδρινό Γυμνάσιον έναθριαμβικό κατόρθωμα της τέχνης,των αυλικών η πολυτέλεια έκτακτη,ο Καισαρίων όλο χάρις κ' εμορφιά(της Κλεοπάτρας υιός, αίμα των Λαγιδών·κ' οι Αλεξανδρινοί έτρεχαν πια στην εορτή,κ' ενθουσιάζονταν, κ' επευφημούσανελληνικά, κ' αιγυπτιακά, και ποιοί εβραίικα,γοητευμένοι με τ' ωραίο θέαμα --μ' όλο που βέβαια ήξευραν τι άξιζαν αυτά,τι κούφια λόγια ήσανε αυτές οι βασιλείες.
